Grinding & Pointing
Restore deteriorated mortar joints with professional tuckpointing
Why Choose Allstate?
Professional Grinding & Pointing in NYC
Mortar joints are the weak point in any masonry wall — exposed to freeze-thaw cycles, rain, and time, they eventually crack and crumble. Allstate Construction's grinding and pointing service removes deteriorated mortar and replaces it with new mortar that matches your building's original profile, color and composition.
The Allstate Difference
Our pointing crews use only diamond cup grinders and oscillating tools — never chisels. We carry mortar color samples from 12 manufacturers to ensure a perfect match.

How We Handle Your Grinding & Pointing Project
Step by step — from first contact to finished job
Joint Inspection
We test mortar hardness and depth of deterioration to determine grinding depth needed.
Grinding
Old mortar removed to minimum ¾" depth — deeper if deterioration requires. Never damage brick face.
Mortar Matching
We mix mortar to match existing in color, texture, and composition (Type S or N).
Pointing & Tooling
New mortar packed in lifts, tooled to original profile, and allowed to cure properly.
Common Questions About Grinding & Pointing
Repointing fills joints with matching mortar. Tuckpointing uses two colors — a base color matching the brick, with a thin contrasting line — a traditional decorative technique.
Angle grinders remove only mortar without impacting brick faces. Chisels can crack, chip or spall brick — especially important on older NYC buildings.
We test your existing mortar hardness. Soft historic brick requires soft lime mortar (Type O or N). Hard modern brick uses Type S. Wrong mortar destroys brick.
